The Rum Blog

Growing up, I seem to remember that half my family members drank gin (& tonic) while the other half drank rum (& coke). This is in addition to wine, beer, and anything else that the occasion might have demanded. My background is a combo of English, Irish, and Scottish so family gatherings were never lacking in libations...

I am not sure exactly when, but I ended up on the rum side of the family. That is not to say that I never drink gin (or other liquors), but my go-to beverage is rum & coke. Like my maternal grandmother, I initially favoured Bacardi white (I know, BO-RING). I eventually got out of that rut, and decided to go on a mission; a very yummy rummy, rum-tasting mission.
Join me as I travel through all the rums at the LCBO and outre mer ("across the sea") as well.

George Street Spiced Rum

Posted by chez Jacquie on Saturday, July 26, 2014, In : Canada
Hooray for another delicious Canadian rum.  Sort of.  In truth, I guess no rum is truly Canadian since we do not (cannot) grow sugar cane here.  In fine print, the label confesses that George Street is a blend of Caribbean rums but the end result is touted as a Newfoundland original, created by over 20 mixologists.

What's in a name?  According to the rum's website, George Street has the most bars per square foot in North America.  Impressive. I guess Newfies like their rum, among other thi...

Lamb's Palm Breeze

I should have known better than to buy a rum called Palm Breeze.  Plenty of claims are made on the bottle: Genuine Demerera Rum; Ultra Smooth; Superior; Est. 1849; all of which give 'cred' to the rum.

It made me think of tropical islands, sandy beaches and warm and gentle breezes coming from the ocean....  Maybe I imagined it would transport me to such a place.  And when it didn't, I was disappointed.

Or maybe I was just disappointed because it was lacking in flavour.  It is a very...

Captain Morgan

Posted by chez Jacquie on Sunday, September 2, 2012, In : Canada
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a huge fan of Captain Morgan rum.  I particularly dislike their white rum.  And I can tell the difference.  I have sent drinks back because I have asked for Bacardi and been given Captain Morgan.

As I mentioned in The Kitchen (BBQ Tour of Duty) I am visiting my parents.  And I have almost exhausted all my rum choices at their local LCBO (because it is smaller) except Captain Morgan.  So I had decided that it was time for me to give some of their other p...

Screech

Posted by chez Jacquie on Sunday, June 17, 2012, In : Canada
Kind of like Appleton's Jamaican rum. But it's CANADIAN. The best of both worlds in my opinion. And there is a great little history in the back of the bottle about how this rum came to be as a result of the sea trade between Canada and the Caribbean. See, rum is educational!
