The Rum Blog

Growing up, I seem to remember that half my family members drank gin (& tonic) while the other half drank rum (& coke). This is in addition to wine, beer, and anything else that the occasion might have demanded. My background is a combo of English, Irish, and Scottish so family gatherings were never lacking in libations...

I am not sure exactly when, but I ended up on the rum side of the family. That is not to say that I never drink gin (or other liquors), but my go-to beverage is rum & coke. Like my maternal grandmother, I initially favoured Bacardi white (I know, BO-RING). I eventually got out of that rut, and decided to go on a mission; a very yummy rummy, rum-tasting mission.
Join me as I travel through all the rums at the LCBO and outre mer ("across the sea") as well.

El Dorado 8 Year Old Rum

Posted by chez Jacquie on Saturday, April 19, 2014, In : Guyana

I finished another rum today. I feel like I blinked and I almost missed it.  I drank it pretty quickly. I had picked it up a couple of weeks ago after a friend of mine (not sure what kind of friend almost cleans you out...just kidding) finished a couple of my rums (see the The Cost of Doing Business, Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3).  It is really good.  I love all El Dorado rums, and I believe this is a new product.  I've tried the 5 Year, 12 Year, 15 year and 6 Year (white) rums.  And I have yet ...

El Dorado Deluxe Silver (Aged 6 Years) Demerara Rum (Hello, Goodbye / The Cost of Doing Business - Part 2)

Posted by chez Jacquie on Sunday, March 23, 2014, In : Guyana
This post covers the first goodbye.  My last post left off with the arrival of a dinner guest with two new (to me) bottles of rum.  In exchange for the privilege of trying his rums, I gave him access to my rum collection/selection.  I have quite a few rums on the go and several of those were nearly empty.  To say he finished two bottles is somewhat misleading, as there was only a shot left in each.  And he did make sure it was ok.
I am going to spend a few minutes on the bottle; It is s...

Lemon Hart Premium Original Demerara Rum

Posted by chez Jacquie on Sunday, February 16, 2014, In : Guyana
Another point for Guyana!  I received this rum for Christmas and it's already an empty bottle on my blog... you do the math.  According to the back of the bottle, there was a Mr. Lemon Hart, and in the lat 1700s he became the first supplier of rum to the British Royal Navy.  The name is almost too weird to make up.  It seems that, presumably after successfully supplying rum to the Navy, Mr. Lemon Hart established his own rum company in 1804.

As if rum doesn't normally smell yummy enough...

El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum

Posted by chez Jacquie on Saturday, August 11, 2012, In : Guyana
Another one bites the dust!  I really enjoyed this one.  It defiitely has a bit of an alcohol quality and burn when drinking straight, but it smooths right out when mixed with coke.  It retails for $35.65 but is currently $2 off.  I think it's worth the extra money to get this one instead of the 5 Year Old.

There are quite a few more El Dorado products to try. The next one will probably the El Dorado 6 Year Old Deluxe Silver because it is affordable. There is a 21 year old ($109.9...

El Dorado 15 Year Old Rum

Posted by chez Jacquie on Friday, June 22, 2012, In : Guyana
This one was given to me as an xmas present.  It's DEE-LISH.  It's not the cheapest rum at the LCBO I believe ($55) but I think it is worth it.

El Dorado 5 Year Old Rum

Posted by chez Jacquie on Sunday, June 17, 2012, In : Guyana
This rum is good.  El Dorado has two meanings. Literally it means The Golden Man (or some other masculine noun), but it also referred to a legend that there was a city, filled with untold treasures, including gold, ruled by a gilded king.  This will be the first of many Spanish lessons as a great number of rums come from Spanish-speaking countries and I have studied Spanish.
