The Rum Blog

Growing up, I seem to remember that half my family members drank gin (& tonic) while the other half drank rum (& coke). This is in addition to wine, beer, and anything else that the occasion might have demanded. My background is a combo of English, Irish, and Scottish so family gatherings were never lacking in libations...

I am not sure exactly when, but I ended up on the rum side of the family. That is not to say that I never drink gin (or other liquors), but my go-to beverage is rum & coke. Like my maternal grandmother, I initially favoured Bacardi white (I know, BO-RING). I eventually got out of that rut, and decided to go on a mission; a very yummy rummy, rum-tasting mission.
Join me as I travel through all the rums at the LCBO and outre mer ("across the sea") as well.

Appleton Special

This rum is from the same distillery/company that makes Appleton Estate, which I have been drinking for years.  This is sort of like the lower end (at least in terms of price) product.  But I highly recommend this rum.  As a side note, rum sold under the name Wray & Nephew is also from the same distillery.  I have one of those upon which I will be reporting shortly.
This bottle is a complete steal at $26.  High value for money, in my opinion.  It is great as a mixer with coke (my standard) a...

Appleton Estate 12 Year Old

Posted by chez Jacquie on Friday, November 29, 2013, In : Jamaica
I realize it's been a very long time since I've posted a rum.  It's been a very busy time for me.  But I also have an extensive amount of rum on the go right now.  I expect there will be a flurry of activity in the very near future as quite a few bottles are getting down to their last drops.  I did finish this one a while ago though.
In a word, this rum is DELICIOUS.  It's darker and richer than the regular Appleton Estate.  It is also smoother and less fruity.  Even though, at $3...

Appleton Estate

I finished this bottle a while back (probably over a month ago) but just got around to doing the blog entry now.  It is a solid and respectable rum.  It has a little bit of that fruitiness that I've come to expect from Jamaican rums.  It's sweet but not too sweet.  It does not have an overwhelming vanilla or caramel flavour like a lot of gold rums.

It has also become more of a go-to for me when I am out.  I am not sure exactly when, but most bars now use Captain Morgan as their bar rai...

Appleton Estate Reserve

Posted by chez Jacquie on Friday, January 25, 2013, In : Jamaica
Sorry for the extended intermission.  I finished this rum a couple of weeks ago, but was busy catching up with posts in The Kitchen and The Bakery.  But I figured it was definitely time to show this blog some love.

I picked this rum up about two months ago while visiting the parentals.  It was on a crazy sale (at least in terms of the LCBO).  See Tough Decisions.  It was delicious.  It has the typical, slightly fruity thing going on that I find the "regular" Appleton's has, but it was ...
