The Rum Blog

Growing up, I seem to remember that half my family members drank gin (& tonic) while the other half drank rum (& coke). This is in addition to wine, beer, and anything else that the occasion might have demanded. My background is a combo of English, Irish, and Scottish so family gatherings were never lacking in libations...

I am not sure exactly when, but I ended up on the rum side of the family. That is not to say that I never drink gin (or other liquors), but my go-to beverage is rum & coke. Like my maternal grandmother, I initially favoured Bacardi white (I know, BO-RING). I eventually got out of that rut, and decided to go on a mission; a very yummy rummy, rum-tasting mission.
Join me as I travel through all the rums at the LCBO and outre mer ("across the sea") as well.

Rums for Christmas

Posted by chez Jacquie on Monday, February 16, 2015, In : State of the "Union"
I got RUMS for Christmas!  Not just these, but these may be my favourites.  There is a long history to me and these rums, which has been told, piece by piece, in multiple blog posts.

In short, my bestie brought me back the white directly from the Dominican quite a few years ago.  At the time, it wasn't available at the LCBO.  So far, it is the smoothest white rum I've had.

Initially the LCBO started to carry the regular Brugal Gold (which I don't care for and still have a bottle on the go), and...

Rum Excursion

Posted by chez Jacquie on Sunday, April 20, 2014, In : State of the "Union"
I went on a bit of a rum excursion today.  It has become a bit of a ritual that I pick up a new rum when I visit the parentals.  However, I have somewhat exhausted my options at the local LCBO and we were out and about today so decided to stop at the new-ish LCBO in Newmarket.  They have quite the impressive wall of rum.
While I have sampled the majority of rums pictured here, they did have enough new ones that it took me a few minutes to decide.  In the end , a rum - Matusalem - that was $5 o...

Hello, Goodbye / The Cost of Doing Business - Part 1

Posted by chez Jacquie on Thursday, March 13, 2014, In : State of the "Union"
Over the last little while, I've taken to doing all my shopping at Kensington Market with some friends, picking up some delicious goodies and then cooking dinner at my place on Saturday night.  Last Saturday, another friend of mine (a fellow rum lover) joined the party at the last minute.  And he came with a bottle of rum in each hand.  Hello new rums!  But goodbye old rums (there will be to subsequent, related posts).  Fortunately (and also unfortunately), he picked up both bottles in the US...

Rum Quest / 'Tis the Season

Posted by chez Jacquie on Thursday, December 5, 2013, In : State of the "Union"
I love it when the LCBO brings out all their Christmas/Holiday specials.  Lots of products go on sale, they have the gift packs with branded glasses and other merchandise, and there are often a lot of limited edition items on offer too.  I look for gifts for myself as well as others.
I was checking out the online catalogue the other day when I came across a rum that was on clearance (at $24.50 it was almost $10 off its original price) because it was being delisted.  It's called Domaine...

Taste the Rainbow

Posted by chez Jacquie on Friday, January 25, 2013, In : State of the "Union"
Sometimes I am very proud of my rum collection.  Although other times I feel slightly embarrassed by the fact that I have so many rums.  But here they are in all their glory.  I've been working on some of these for a while.  They are not all "everyday" rums, some because they were a little more expensive and some because they cannot be easily replaced.  I think I currently have a pretty good representation of rums from different countries.  Taste the rainbow!

El Dorado 12 - This one is from G...

Tough Decisions

Posted by chez Jacquie on Saturday, November 24, 2012, In : State of the "Union"
chez Jacquie is on the road again, visiting the parentals.  As has become the norm, I made a trip to the local LCBO to pick up a new rum.  And LO!  So many rums were on sale, and not just the usual $1 off.  I couldn't choose just one, so I bought two.
My current best-value pick (Cruzan 9) is on sale and I was tempted to get that one.  Bacardi 8 is on mega sale, $5 off so that also tempted me greatly.

In the end, I went with the El Dorado Silver since I've had my eye on it for a while...

Definiton of Rum

Posted by chez Jacquie on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, In : State of the "Union"

So I did some more research on exactly what can be called Rum.  I've incuded excerpts from the Food and Drug Regulations as well as the Canadian Food Inspetion Agency.  It's very interesting.  I have studied a lot of languages over the years but Legalese was not one of them.  While I get the gist, still have questions.

It appears that there are some standard ingredients (see excerpts below) which do not have to be declared since they are considered a standard component of rum.  However, it d...

State of the "Union"

Posted by chez Jacquie on Monday, July 16, 2012, In : State of the "Union"

Rum Union that is.  I had some friends over for dinner who like rum so I laid out all my current rum offerings.  Which is at once both awesome and embarassing.  Hey, at least the bottles aren't all empty.  I just happen to have a large spread of rum on hand right now.  Take a peak.

In case the names are too hard to read, from left to right: Angostura 5 Years, Pyrat Rum, Brugal, El Dorado 12, Bacardi Oakheart, Bacardi Gold, Bacardi White and  Admiral Rodney.  The latter is the most e...
